Montserrat is a rocky massif traditionally considered the most important and significant mountain in Catalonia (Spain). It is located 50 km northwest of Barcelona between the regions of Anoia, Bajo Llobregat and Bages. On this mountain is the sanctuary and monastery dedicated to the Virgin of Montserrat which gives its name to both the massif and religious buildings.
The word mont means monte and serrat means serrated in Catalan. Such name is given to him because of its peculiar morphology, in which it seems as if it had been tried to be sawed with a giant saw. Both the word serrat and serralada (mountain range) come from serra, derived from the Latin word serra, the name given to the sawing instrument. In the heraldic representations, Montserrat appears as a group of mountains of gold on gules field with a gold saw that cuts it above.
Near Montserrat you can find hotels at a good price. We recommend a hotel in Calella de Mar (Barcelona), an hour and a half from the massif.
