Montenegre Park

Do you come to the Catalan coast and do you like hiking? We recommend a trip to the Montnegre Park. It is located at the foot of the mountains of the Litoral mountain range, next to the Maresme coast, and is notable for its huge stone pines, holm oaks and cork oaks.

Better known as Parque del Corredor, the Parque del Montnegre is perfect for spending a quiet day with your family, especially at this time of year. In the early hours of the morning the sun still squeezes and you can enjoy a wonderful landscape. The best option to take advantage of the morning sun is to stay at a hotel in Calella, very close to the Montnegre Park.

The park massifs draw the entire Catalan coast and part of the Litoral mountain range. This proximity between sea and mountains favors the climate and vegetation of the area. In autumn you can find forest species such as wild boar and Mediterranean wild species such as the squirrel, the jineta, the dormouse, the black woodpecker or the arendajo. And on several occasions you can also see martens, gray dormice and red voles.

History of the Montnegre Park:

The man settled in the mountains of the Catalan coast at the end of the Neolithic and built the Iberian towns, especially in the vicinity of the Montnegre Park.

The Iberian peoples, specifically the Laietans, lived on hunting, fishing and farming on the Catalan coast. Today we can still find geological remains of the Iberian peoples in the Montnegre Park, such as the dolmen of the Piedra Gentil or the dolmen of the Piedra Arca (between Cardedeu and Vilalba Sasserra). You can also find the remains of the Iberian villages at the foot of the Castle of Burriac in the municipality of Cabrera de Mar. Also, in the castle you can find architectural constructions documented in the year 1017.

Years later, the Maresme was occupied by the Romans who built numerous agricultural villages. In these times, the population was grouped in the lower areas, closer to the sea, and churches were built such as the church of Santa Eulàlia de Tapioles in the municipality of Vallgorguina or the old Romanesque church Santa María de Pineda de Mar.

On the other hand, at the highest point of the Montnegre Park we can also find the Corridor Sanctuary, a hermitage of late Gothic style built in 1544 near the Municipality of Dosrius.

Throughout these last decades, the climate and the nature of the area have turned the Maresme into a zone of plantation and nearby crops, such as the aforementioned piñonero pines of the Maresme Park.

The Maresme is a landscape that for centuries has been rebuilding and adapting to our times. At present, in the Maresme Park there are also old farmhouses that have been reformed little by little such as the Mas de Can Pradell, which has been refurbished as a Mediterranean restaurant, or Can Bosc, a hotel between Arenys de Munt and Can Palau.

Festivities in the Montnegre Park:

In the Park of the Montnegre diverse popular festivals and events are programmed like the course of mountain “Terranegra” with a route of 21 kilometers and 200 meters of difference or the Annual Party “Viu the Parc” organized by the Diputació de Barcelona to encourage the practice of sport in the Natural Parks of Catalonia.

The Montnegre Park has an exceptional beauty.
